Zion, Bryce and Moab are fantastic places to visit for their red rocks and stunningly dramatic cliff views.
The scenery begins to change from red to green on the drive north through Utah. There are a few routes leading to Yellowstone from Utah, you can approach from the east, west and up the middle. We drove from Logan Canyon up through Idaho. It might have been a slower route, but it was relaxing – except when we were pulled over for speeding.
Logan Canyon, Utah is lovely and has some fly fishing opportunities, if that’s your thing.

The drive through Idaho was beautiful, in spite of lots of road construction and slow traffic.

Our final destination… Montana! Our accommodations were located about 30 miles northwest of West Yellowstone. A bit remote, I spent half of a day trying to find a place to buy ketchup… I never found it.
I really liked this lake, it was a few shades of blue and turquoise.

I can never get used to this sign, I always want to run for the car when I see it. Apparently it’s totally normal for people to hang out in the stomping grounds of terrifying man eating predators. I don’t get it!!
The back country is where the best fishing and hiking can be found, but everyone will tell you to buy the $50 can of bear spray before you go. Take that advice!! While packing up after fly fishing a river up the mountains, my family was notified by a passerby of a Grizzly active nearby, what!?
And not only do you have to worry about Grizzlies, but now the Otters are mad too!!

Yellowstone National Park is popular and there are tons of cars and people. I still enjoyed the views and the opportunity to eat a sandwich on a big stone overlooking a beautiful river. The stones are actually yellow!!
We exited Yellowstone through Gardiner. The line to get into Yellowstone from this town was very short. This might be a better way to enter the park than West Yellowstone, which was about 6 lanes wide of bumper to bumper traffic.
Finally, my last dinner out west. In Bozeman, I just wanted a little bit of chicken and some vegetables, this is what I got- a dinner for a hungry cowboy! After visiting 6 national parks, it was the right thing- delicious!!
